Getting To
Know The Different Liposuction Surgical Operations
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery
that aims to improve the shape of the
body by removing unwanted fats. It can be performed on several areas on
the body such as the hips, neck, thighs, upper arms and back. Before
undergoing liposuction, there are a lot of factors that must be
considered. Aside from costs, you may also need to understand the
various liposuction procedures so you'd be able to decide what's best
for you. Like other surgical
procedures, liposuction imposes risks and
complications which you also need to consider.
More and more people are planning to get a liposuction to give them
that great body without the efforts associated with other weight loss
programs such as dieting and exercising. Since the fat cells removed
from the body won't be replaced, liposuction also offers a
longer-lasting effect.
Weeks before undergoing liposuction
surgery, you will have to discuss
with your doctor ways on how to reduce risks and get better results.
Normally, your doctor would advise you to stop taking contraceptive
pills and anti-inflammatory medicines. Contraceptives reduces risks of
blood clotting while anti-inflammtory medicines lead to excessive
bleeding. You will also have to start living a healthier lifestyle by
giving up smoking and reducing alcohol intake.
There are several techniques for doing liposuction, but basically, it
involves a small hallow tube called a cannula and a suction device.
This cannula is injected into the area to suction out the fats. With
the improvements in technology, a lot of effective methods can be used.
These methods will be discussed by your surgeon so you can decide which
method is most appropriate for you.
Before the operation you may opt to take a general anaesthetic which
would keep you asleep during the whole operation. Your surgeon may also
suggest a local anaesthetic that would just leave the treated area
numb. After the operation, you may be able to go home during the same
day or be advised to stay overnight, depending on the extent and
results of the operation.
A common
liposuction technique is the wet liposuction. A fluid
containing a local anaesthetic, epinephrine and salt solution, is
inserted into your body which loosens the fat cells making it easier to
suction out. The dry liposuction is similar to the wet liposuction
without the injection of the fluid. However, this technique can lead to
more bruises and excessive bleeding, Tumescent liposuction is the
opposite of dry liposuction. Large amounts of fluid is injected to
assist in the breakdown of fats.
There is also what we call the ultrasound-assisted
liposcution or UAL.
The ultrasound waves liquifies hard to remove fats, especially those
found in the back. A variation of UAL is the PAL or power assisted
liposuction. This simplifies the process by using a mechanical hollow
tube, reducing the chances of damaging nearby internal organs.
This use of cannula or hollow tube has been found out to cause several
complexities such as skin necrosis and seromas. A type of UAL has been
developed making the cannula procedure unnecessary. This type is called
external ultrasound assisted liposuction or XUAL/EUAL where ultrasonic
waves are applied from outside. However, this procedure is not yet
extensively used because its effectiveness have not been thoroughly
proven.
After the operation, you will be given some painkillers to relieve you
of any discomforts. You will also be advised on how to better care for
your stitches. Though liposuction is considered to be safe, and its
advantages far outweigh the risks, you must not just make impulsive
decisions. Liposuction is a potentially dangerous operation if
necessary procedures are not followed carefully.
